4 Maxims of Preparation

The Maxims of Preparation Support on the Internet: Facebook Pilgerweg Via Jutlandica Camino Forum - run by Ivar in Santiago Pilgrimage from your House (Jutlandica) Following the Long Distance Trail E1 Camino to Go - Germany Donald Rumsfeld, former Secretary of Defense had a maxim about using military intelligence to plan a military operation: You know what you know. You know what you don’t know You don’t know what you know You don’t know what you don’t know. The Via Jutlandica (which closely parallels the E1) will be my third German winter hike. I began thinking of this hike in September of this year, when I thought it might be picturesque to explore the Baltic Sea. Maxim #1: “You know what you know” The very first decision is “When?”. I only feel like 2 or 3 weeks. I have classes from late August through the first week of December. However, I am an auditor, so since it is not for grades, I could miss a couple of weeks without penalty. Summers are reserved for hiking with my partner in...

Everyday life in Schleswig-Holstein (1600 - 1900 A.D.)

Image
Everyday life in a Schleswig-Holstein village between 1600 and 1900 ( Source Material : FamilySearch.org) The majority of people in Schleswig-Holstein lived in the country during the above mentioned time frame. They were organized in small villages consisting of men and women, married and single folk, grown-ups and children, old and young, farmers, craftsmen, merchants, day laborers, servants, rich and poor, newcomers and old-established families, people passing-through and others.  All these people and their circumstances formed a complex legal, economic, social and cultural network and had an impact not entirely homogenous throughout Schleswig-Holstein.  In the western parts of the duchies the farmers owned their lands, in the middle parts of Schleswig-Holstein (Geest) the ground was not as fertile so that workers of the land had to be in communication about sowing and harvesting, cattle drive and grazing. Manors dotted the Eastern parts of Schleswig-Holstein. Although t...

Task List

Task List Date 05 Nov 2025 Total Jutlandica (tbd) miles. Total Spain 2025 245 miles. Total Caminos 2025: 245 miles. Total All Caminos: 2353 miles Airplane $ 1020  Travel Insurance $ 132 I am putting together more details about my upcoming two-week hike through northernmost Germany. Although I have experience with Bavaria, Brandenburg, Saxony and Saxony-Anhalt from my Muenchner Jakobsweg and Via Imperii 2024 , my journey through Schlewig-Holstein is as of yet unformed. I have three options: 1) follow the Baltic Sea to Lubek, follow the North Sea or follow the Kiel Canal. All look interesting. Perhaps I should shoot for parts of each, rather than make the entirety of one choice the goal. Guidebook: Ordered. Delivery Date Unk ... In an unfortunate turn of events, I got a notice from the publishers that due to uncertainty in the customs and tariffs status between the US and Europe, they were not shipping to the USA. I really wanted this boo...

Travel Concerns

Image
Frankfurt Airport, 15 Aug 2024, Returning from Spain Travel Concerns International flights require precision.  One would think that the number of layovers is the most important factor, but that is not the case. Where the layovers occur is much more important. Currently flying through Newark NJ is highly problematic due to equipment outages and tower staffing, meaning a high likelihood of flights being delayed at best, and canceled at worst. In Great Britain , even if the layover is solely for international transit, one must, e.g. at Heathrow, process through immigration and customs. Additionally, currently one must have a pre-approved international entry visa, even though never leaving the international section of the airport. And that means, unfortunately, luggage collection and re-check. The shorter the layover, the higher the probability of a missed connection due to weather or maintenance or crew staffing and so on. A layover inside the European Union’s internal border control...
