Weather

Temperatures were in the '40s most of the day.
And the rain held off most of the day.
In fact, I would not even describe it as rain. When it did fall, it was more like a mist that was hanging in the air but was more than substantial enough to cause me to put on my rain slick to keep both me and by gear dry.

I would say the one time I really had rain was when I was about 15 minutes from the hotel. So I just quickened my pace rather than stop to gear up again with rain gear.

On the Road

Well I've got lots to talk about today.

First real day of hiking on this trip. Started out from the hostel a little after 9:00. Pretty quickly. Found my first trail marker for the Fördesteig route.

Started off in Flensburg so it was urbanized a couple of hours.

Then I finally broke into some trails along the actual fjord itself without any accompanying marinas. It was absolutely gorgeous. The fjord is very wide, and the other side is Denmark.

After about 3 hours of walking, I decided to take a detour to Glücksburg. And glad I did. Having visited castles in Spain, Castle Glücksburg was quite different in architecture, interior style and the curators put in the extra effort add to the experience by having appropriately dressed mannequins in the rooms.

After about an hour, I returned to the trail and headed for my next destination, the lighthouse at Schausande.

I reached the lighthouse about an hour later, and could not get inside as it's still an active facility. But it's a very tall lighthouse and very distinctive.

As I was standing next to it and looking up, I remembered how much my mom loved lighthouses. It was a good moment to remember that I miss her.

Checking my time, I felt I could squeeze in a visit to the Holnis protected nature area. So off I went again.

Around 2:30 I made it to the nature park, and had a beautiful walk. It was very beautiful inside and very relaxing to be in quiet and serene surroundings.

However, it was getting dark and by the time I left the nature area I probably only had a half hour of sunlight left.

I made it into Drei shortly after Sunset, and with no lights on the streets, it was a little difficult finding the hotel, but I did and I checked in.

So it's been quite some time since I've walked 15 miles, and I'm feeling pretty proud of myself today.

But fortunately LOL tomorrow is a very light day, an approximately 6-mile walk.

The weather report looks good. So I will try and find one or two things to do on the way because otherwise I will arrive way too early for check-in :-).

Meaningful Moment

Anyway, I had a little bit of energy, so I took a night walk on the Promenade, and then took a turn onto the main drag. Hard to describe how pitch black it is out here at night.

It was really creepy for a city boy to have no sounds from anything related to humanity, and no lights except those in the distance as I walked along the road.

I saw not a car tonight.

I guess on Sunday nights the people here just hunker down in the house. Of course, I'm in a little beachfront community.

I suppose being off season has something to do with it.
Anyway, it was a good walk.

Random Thought of the Day

The day was a mix of quiet, small beachfront communities, pasture land and walking along the edge of the Fjord.

All in all much of the day was quite beautiful.

I will be staying close to the fjord on this trail

They are cute and the weather was not

That's Denmark on the other side

It's always better to be off pavement

My first goal of the day reached - Castle Glücksburg

So different from Spanish castles

The castle chapel. I took a few minutes to meditate.

I'm not quite sure why some of the servants are animals

Auguste Viktoria

On October 22, Auguste Viktoria was born to Duke Friedrich VIII of Schleswig-Holstein Sonderburg-Augustenburg and his wife Adelheid, née Princess of Hohen-Langenburg.
1852: After the death of the Danish King Friedrich VI. (1808-1863) the London Protocol came into force. This regulated the succession in Schleswig-Holstein and forced the family to move to Kiel.
1864: Second German-Danish War. In 1864, Prussia was offered the opportunity to incorporate the Duchies into Prussian troops. The Prussian victory at the Dybbøl entrenchments was decisive.

WHAT ARE MÄRCHEN?
Märchen are mysterious and wonderful little stories from a long past and mostly indefinite time. The plot takes place in fantastic locations. In the Märchen, natural laws are often suspended, and thus there is magic and enchantment, and one encounters strange beings such as dwarves, giants, fairies, or even witches.
The term Märchen is a so-called diminutive (diminutive form) of the medieval Mär, which means the news, the report, or the tale.
In the case of the medieval "Mär", that is the news, the report or the tale.
The term has been documented since the middle of the 15th century.
