Weather
Unbelievably it's 49° in Northern Germany.
I hear Rochester is experiencing single digit wind chills, average temperatures in the teens and inches of snow.
I should not jinx myself, but who would have thought Northern Germany would have had much better weather. Gray skies, but I'm not cold.
On the Road
Relaxing before the hike starts
Well I just lucked out on my next reservation. Because today is a short day for me, I'd say about 6 MI, with a 3:00 p.m. check-in, I was going to be hard-pressed to kill time on the way down there.
However, I just received a message from management that they need to leave at noon. So the front door will be unlocked, and the key to my room is in the lock on the inside of the door. What this means is this I can check in anytime I want.
So I thought I was going to have to kill time here in Drei at the Hotel Ostsee Strandhaus, but I can leave anytime I want now.
So I'm going to sit here at the Strandhaus and really enjoy a quiet cup of coffee. And then I'll be underway.
On the trail
Absolutely nobody on the trails today except me.Had a series of modest hills which made it a bit more interesting.
Spent more of the day in either pastures or forests than along the water. Nice break, very relaxing to have some solitary moments in the woods.
Langballigau
Got to the hotel at 1:00 p.m. so I have a fair amount of time to walk around this very tiny beach town.
All the restaurants are closed, so it was time to break out my food in my backpack. Backpack. Lunch was half a tuna fish sandwich and a slice of pizza and some crackers.
Walked around for about an hour. Was nice to stretch the legs. Like I say, not that much excitement going on.
I have this pretty confident feeling I'm the only one in the hotel.
I have this pretty confident feeling that I am the only one in the port area.
I have this pretty confident feeling that there's nobody around me for some great distance.
4:30 p.m. and taking another walk before it gets completely dark. Sun is already way set and there's just a little light left to stretch the legs one more time.
By the time I got back to the hotel, I was completely convinced that I was not the only one in the hotel, but I'm the only on the whole wharf.
Just passed 8:00 p.m. and had supper. More pizza, protein, power bar and sugared almonds.
Took one more walk outside to stretch the legs. In the darkness I felt the wind blowing in from the fjord and heard the waves breaking on the beach.
When I was in the Navy, at night time I would go up on deck, and the sound of the waves breaking against the hull of the ship while we were underway always made me feel relaxed. When I'm ashore, and basically by myself, I always find it so disconcerting when there are no lights and it's so quiet.
Had my first experience with a duvet tonight. Had to query Google as to why I only had a quilt and a linen bag big enough to cover the quilt. Just not used to that. In other German hotels there were sheets and blankets. Anyway, I got the answer from Google and I covered the quilt with the duvet and I'm now under the duvet. 🙂
Meaningful Moment
Just starting the day, but the sun is breaking out from the clouds. I haven't seen the sun since I arrived in Germany 7 days ago.
Too good to be sitting around chilling, so I'm starting today's hike earlier than planned.
Definitely have to take advantage of walking in the Sun.
Random Thought of the Day
Glad I looked ahead at my destination today. It seems like there's three or four places where I can go to get some pictures in Langballigau.Since I expect to be there early because of a short walk today, this will give me something to do in the afternoon. If all goes well, I will be at the hotel by 1:00 p.m.
Made it to the hotel by 1:00. Nice little room.
Unfortunately, all four restaurant/cafes here are closed. Fortunately I brought power bars and crackers and sugared almonds and pizza and half a tuna fish sandwich. So I'm good for supper tonight and breakfast tomorrow morning.
The sun was out over Holnis this morning. I was on my way to breakfast.
Had to get a picture of the sky with me in it so that y'all wouldn't think I was just doing a copy and paste photo edit.
I almost missed this marker. Because the trail looked like I should have gone to the left. But something felt wrong so I backed up and took another look at everything. To see the marker, which is on the white post, I had to walk halfway up the driveway.
Just continued to be a beautiful day
Lot more forest today
Interesting ship
One of the few people I saw today was this guy heading out to fish.
Loving forests
So cute
In Langballigau. I believe it's a depiction of a search and rescue guy.
Sun is gone, but the fjord is still beautiful
Speaking of search and rescue, that's a gorgeous SAR boat
I was having some fun at the ride and share bench.
